Vascular Access in London
The Getting it Right First Time (GIRFT)- Renal report states that 80% of the prevelant and 60% of the incident dialysis population should have permenant vascular access. At present, rates across London vary significantly. The reasons for this are multi-factorial and not always easily solved. In addition, it’s been shown that patient experience of use of permenent access varies widely. An education and training programme, MAGIC (Managing Access by Generating Improvements in Cannualation), developed by KQUIP has been designed to improve this.
Aims and objectives of the group:
Aims
The Vascular Access Group has three overarching aims. To:
-
- Increase definitive access rates across LKN
- Increase % access completed as a day case across the LKN
- Improve patient experience and outcome with VA needling
Objectives
Its core focus for delivery during 2023-24 and into 24-25 will be to:
-
- Implement agreed VA pathways (urgent and planned) across the LKN
- Support Local QI projects targeted at identified ‘pinch points’
- Ensure MAGIC (Managing Access by Generating Improvements in Canulation) is delivered across the LKN, with additional patient choice/experience data collected and analysed
- Complete root cause analysis of low day-case rates with each unit, with findings developed into a case for change with associated timed plans for delivery
